We talked briefly about a something-a-mab drug at the meeting tonight and it sounded interesting. I found some Wikipedia links describing cytokines and IL-5 - amazing. They're worth a read...and then another...and another. There's also a link to a report discussing the use of a medication specifically to treat EE. At a conference last summer the anti-IL-5 medication was mentioned a couple of times but it was stressed that the process to make it to production, cleared by the FDA, and then matched to the right patients was a loooong process.
Katy - help?

Wow - talk about your relaxing lunch-time read! If the language in the links reads like Greek to you, don't worry - you are not alone! All jokes aside, it can be difficult to sift through the science surrounding medications. The bottom line is that anti IL-5 medications (like mepolizumab) work more directly against the part of the immune systm that is suspected to be connected to the increased eosinophils in EoE. The long-term expectations for this drug (and others like it, such as reslizumab - another anti IL-5 med being studied) remain to be seen - how much of the drug is needed to decrease the eosinophils, whether the drugs will bring long-term improvement, side effects of the drug, etc are just SOME of the questions that still remain. As eg previously mentioned, it is a LOOONG process. Still, it is a hopeful possibility.
